One
This morning you chirped
“Pio, pio, pio”
and I came to your door
tap, tap, “Can I play?”
You smile with your four new teeth
and open your hand to me.
We play peek-a-boo
until your laughter becomes a sigh.
We sing “Los pollitos dicen,
pio, pio, pio”
until you yawn and rest
your cheek on my chest
and our separateness
disappears into sleep.
“Los pollitos dicen” in Spanish
means “The little chicks say.”
